On to Australia

Had to say a bleary-eyed adieu to New Zealand this morning. I will miss it. But now it’s time to move forward, on to Australia.

Flight was uneventful which suits me just fine. Even arriving at the airport only 45 minutes before departure, with a bag to check in – on an international flight, no less – was no problem at all. Windy during landing which made for a few exciting bumps but all was fine.

Arrived in Sydney, local time just after 10. Breezed through customs/immigration. Then got Gabriel’s taxi, purely by chance. He’s been driving cab about three years, so not too long. We got talking about Australian politics, something I rarely read about at home.

Gabe’s Indian, very interested in politics and has an opinion about everything. He treats it as a form of entertainment, which in a way I guess it is. Good fellow, I liked him right away..

Took 2 walking tours today, 1 from 2:30 to 5:30, the other 6:00 to 7:30, and if you think that’s a lot of walking, well, yeah, sure is.

The fellow doing the tours is Ross. He and his girlfriend have been doing these tours for 3 1/2 years. And here’s the cool thing about bit: The tours are tip-only tours. There’s no set fee. But hey, if he & his lady can survive that long on a tip-only business, he’d doing something right. They’ve got a site: http://www.Imfree.com.au

He can tell you all those little things that don’t make it on “official” tours, such as the partially roasted corpse that became a tourist attraction (long since dismantled) and the ongoing argument between 3 pubs as to which is the oldest. The argument’s been ongoing for over 100 years.

Got chatting with Penny, also a tourist visiting from the UK. She’s visiting her son here, he’s been working here for 18 months. She said he’s got itchy feet again and wants to do more travelling. Penny’s not keen on the idea but she promised to hear him out.

Also took a tour through the Australian museum which is worth a look. Seems everything here is poisonous.

No idea what’s on for tomorrow, all I know now is that I need a shower & 8 hours sleep!

Welcome to the wide brown land mate. If you’re staying in the CBD, make sure you swing through the Sydney Brewhouse and say hi! I’ll even shout you one of my beers!
